Vallarta Online / PUERTO VALLARTA, JALISCO – Trash fishing becomes a crucial tool in the fight to clean up our seas. The organization Limpia Tu Mar PV is calling for participation in the first International Garbage Fishing Tournament, an event that will take place on October 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Puerto Vallarta. The main objective of this tournament is to remove one ton or more of garbage from the sea and raise awareness about the importance of keeping our oceans clean.

The Origin of Limpia Tu Mar PV

Limpia Tu Mar PV was born in 2019 after the passage of tropical storm Narda, which affected the beaches of southern Banderas Bay. A group of tourist service providers in Puerto Vallarta, noticing the large amount of garbage washed into the sea, decided to join together to support the victims and, subsequently, to incorporate as a civil association in 2022. Since then, this organization has worked tirelessly in garbage fishing, collecting half a ton of garbage during last year’s rainy season alone.

Details of the International Garbage Fishing Tournament

The trash fishing tournament seeks to bring together 30 boats sponsored by companies or boat owners, allowing teams of 4 to 6 people, including children, to participate without covering the cost of a boat. The boats will depart from the Playa Los Muertos dock, and the registration fee is $4,000 pesos per team. The funds raised will go to

The funds will be used to purchase additional trash fishing equipment and to finance future cleanups in the bay.

Zone of Operation and Event Objectives

The cleanup area of the tournament will span from Punta de Mita to Cabo Corrientes, focusing on collecting only floating trash in the sea. Registration for the tournament is open on the organization’s official website, limpiatumar.com. In addition to registration, the organization invites volunteers and sponsors to join this initiative.

Luis Villaseñor, director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust, emphasized the importance of community participation in this event: “Our participation is very important, because Vallarta is all of us, locals and visitors; let’s enjoy a dynamic among family and friends and let’s contribute to the benefit of the environment”.

Participant Awards and Conviviality

To encourage participation, prizes will be awarded to the teams that collect the most garbage. At the end of the day, a social gathering will be held to celebrate the cleanup efforts and encourage collaboration among volunteers, sponsors, and participants. This event is not only a competition, but also an opportunity to strengthen the community and encourage respect for our natural environment.

The Impact of Garbage Fishing on the Community

The Limpia Tu Mar PV organization has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting the marine environment. The International Trash Fishing Tournament is more than an event; it is an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about the importance of keeping our seas clean. Puerto Vallarta, with this type of initiative, continues to set an example of how the community can unite to preserve the natural environment and guarantee a cleaner and healthier future for generations to come.
