Mexico’s newest destination, Riviera Nayarit invites anglers from all over the world to their first annual International Marlin & Tuna Fishing Tournament. Thousands of dollars in prizes await participants, not to mention, some of the best sport fishing in the world.

Anglers from near and far will be competing for over $150,000 USD in prizes in the First Annual International Marlin & Tuna Fishing Tournament Riviera Nayarit, on July 13th, 14th, and 15th. This is good news for Banderas Bay fishing fanatics, who so far have only had one tournament per season in which to participate.

This is the first destination event to be held under the area’s new banner of Riviera Nayarit, the state’s “brand name” for the 160 kilometers of coastline along the State of Nayarit that stretches from Nuevo Vallarta to San Blas.

First place winners in both the marlin and tuna categories will receive $10,000 USD, or equivalent, and special $10,000 prizes are designated for the first 300kg. Marlin and the first 176kg Tuna presented. More cash awards, outboard motors, airline tickets, vacations, hotel packages, fishing gear, and many more prizes are available for fish in all categories, including sailfish and Dorado.

Along with corporate sponsors, the Visitor and Convention Bureau of the State of Nayarit and Club de Pesca de Bahía de Banderas, AC are the primary sponsors of the tournament. Hosted in beautiful Paradise Village Marina in Nuevo Vallarta, the competition begins on Saturday morning after a 6:00am Opening Ceremony.

The fish are biting, according to local fishing charter experts, and there are still quite a few boats available for charter. A directory of local charter operations is included on the event website. So far, about half of the expected number of entries has already registered, with teams coming from locations as varied as San Diego and the Mexican cities of Guanajuato and Guadalajara. Each team consists of four or fewer members, with a registration fee of $30,000 pesos per team. Registrations will be accepted until Friday July 13th.

Conservation is evident in the tournament rules which specify that the minimum weight for a capture to qualify for each species is: Marlin -100Kgs, Tuna -30Kgs, Sailfish -30Kgs, and Mahi-Mahi -10Kgs. Electric reels are prohibited, and maximum line strength allowed is 130# test. Complete tournament rules are available at www.fishingtournamentvallarta.com . The Official Judge for this first Riviera Nayarit tournament is veteran official Captain Cipriano Quintero, who has been the International Sailfish and Marlin Fishing Tournament judge since 1959. He will be assisted by his son and grandson, who will be the official recorder and measurer.

Come on out and watch the big fish get weighed each day of the tournament. Weigh in action will take place on both Saturday and Sunday from 2:00pm to 7:00pm at the Yacht Club next to Paradise Village in Nuevo Vallarta. Prizes will be awarded at the wind up banquet on Sunday night.
