Whales & Man an Unfair Future
by Biol. Oscar S. Aranda Mena |
| After whale hunting was suspended (after having eliminated 90% of their original population), the new generation of whales began to loose the fear which their ancestors had towards human beings and their boats. On the contrary, during recent years, these whales have demonstrated a special curiosity towards human beings; and humans have also become friendlier towards them and have traded their harpoons for video cameras. The irony and the moral injustice is that; after spending years earning the whale's trust, humans will again deceive them in the most despicable way, this bond that has been created between humans and whales. Whale hunting countries, such as Japan, are lobbying and strongly pressuring for the return of whale hunting (a practice they never fully suspeneded), even against the public opinion of their own citizens. If whale hunting season is declared again, all the whales who feel comfortable around whale watching boats will be deceived and cruelly assassinated. This in a few words means that this is comparable to being back stabbed by your best friend. We can conclude that all of these problems which we have discussed are caused by humans, and that the future of whales will not be different than ours. A quote by Albert Einstein comes to mind, one in which he compared the universe's infinity to that of human stupidity. And finally I feel compelled to quote these words of wisdom: "There is plenty throughout the world to provide for mankind, but never enough to satisfy their greed". - Mahatma Gandhi |
