The importance of Spring

by Biol. Oscar S. Aranda Mena |

The Origins of Spring
The word spring comes from the Latin and is translated as "The Beginning of Summer". Although the origins of spring is based on the position of the earth with respect to the sun, it may turn out to be boring conducting astrological research, and as such, I will limit myself to stating that during spring time, the days become more joyful, and the nights become shorter, and as such, this produces a noticeable increase in temperature compared to the winter, and stimulating plants to develop and flourish. This means more food for the insects and animals, thereby creating an abundant food chain splendor, which has made this time of the year very popular.

A Celebration of Life
For humans, spring has become very valuable by being the time to prepare land and planting crops, thereby providing the perfect conditions for germination. For humans, this is a time linked to love, and sex, when hormones shoot to their maximum and pregnancies begin to increase. Although most of us tend to forget our animal nature, each of our brains is programmed to follow certain patterns of light and darkness. It has been proven that during spring and summer, our bodies are activated along with the rest of nature and it has also been demonstrated that depression and suicides also decrease noticeably.

In simple terms, winter marks the end of a cycle where the majority of living beings stop and take a pause from their development; in order to store energy. With the arrival of spring a series of events "are triggered" which start the beginning of a period of personal activity; one in which even the smallest of organisms also participate. Perhaps this change may not be so noticeable in humans due the changes of climate which dominates Vallarta, but in other regions, this is extremely noticeable and celebrated by all living beings.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the abundance of life, which surrounds us, has made us accustomed to ignoring these small signals, which indicate the beginning of spring. Those new sprouts on the trees in front of our work, those small flowers that suddenly appear in the neighboring empty lot or that bird which seems to sing at the dawn of a new day, are sometimes not enough to open our senses as to the change of seasons.

Further north and in the center of our country where the climate is more extreme, it is possible to see the changes of the seasons more notably. We don't need to travel that far; because the northern coast of Banderas Bay has a markedly different vegetation than the south, and this allows us to see how the vegetation begins to gradually change their leaves and branches; some which were shed months before in order to protect themselves from the winter. On the road to Punta de Mita, one can observe flowering shrubs everywhere, meanwhile, the whales and the birds abandon the bay and begin their journey back north, where upon their return, they will find a splendorous spring filled with food.

Therefore, let's fall in love with spring, which has punctually arrived to touch our senses. That abundant pollen which floats in the will not only causes us some bothersome allergies, but rather reminds us that they are the seeds of life floating in the air.
